Subscribe to word of the day feeds
There are many social media pages that do ‘word of the day or ‘words of the week posts. You can subscribe to a few pages of your choice. So the next time you scroll through your Instagram or YouTube feed, you will come across at least one new word, its meaning, and usage. Learning these words on a daily basis will go a long way in boosting your English vocabulary.
Use the retrieval method
The retrieval method of studying involves remembering lessons at a later point in time. Using this method can be useful to revise the words you have been learning on a daily basis. You could use flashcards to note down the correct meaning and usage of the words you have learned. This reinforcement of earlier learning will act as a foundation for increasing your English vocabulary.
Be the two-minute reader
This is perhaps the most cliched thing to do to build your vocabulary but it also happens to be the most effective and fastest way to achieve your goal of being a proficient English speaker. For those of you who find it difficult to read, start by reading for two minutes every day. Reading an entire chapter might seem daunting but two minutes is easily doable. Be consistent with your two-minute reading and gradually increase your reading time. While you read, note down new words and learn their meanings.
Watch shows and news channels
The role of popular media and news channels in learning a language is quite underrated. It is perhaps the fastest way to learn new words. With the rise in OTT platforms, there are a variety of shows that you can watch to improve your English language. But make sure to choose the right kind of shows for this purpose. Some notable examples are ‘The Crown’ and ‘Sherlock Holmes'.
For those people who cannot afford to purchase an online English-speaking course, watching news channels like the BBC and CNN can be a good starting point to master the English language.
