How to talk confidently in an interview?

Wed Nov 23, 2022

Confidence is a trait not many are born with but that does not mean it cannot be developed. For many of us speaking in our native language is not a problem, but when it comes to conversing in English, we tend to falter. So how can we overcome this obstacle and start speaking English fluently? Firstly, it is important to understand that anyone can speak with confidence as long as they truly believe in themself. There are countless well-known personalities who came to the limelight with poor English speaking skills and then worked on their language skills to become proficient in English. Kangana Ranaut, a Bollywood artist, struggled to speak in English in her earlier interviews but today she is one of the most confident English speakers in the industry.

  Prepare an engaging self-introduction

As Mark Twain rightly says, “ The secret of getting ahead is getting started”. To feel confident in an interview, you need to have an engaging self-introduction. You should write it down and learn it well in advance. Almost all interviewers ask candidates to introduce themselves. If you are prepared in beforehand, then you automatically feel confident about yourself during the interview. In most cases, your self-introduction will be the starting point for the conversation between you and the interviewer. This gives you the opportunity to direct the conversation to your will.

Do proper research on the company

It is imperative that you do proper research on the company before you go for the interview. This will help you answer any question the interviewer may ask about the company. Sometimes just to check if you have gone through the company website, interviewers tend to ask for the name of the CEO of the company. Being unable to answer the question could be a deal breaker. So, do go over the company website thoroughly. This will also give you an idea of the company culture and the kind of people you would be working with.

Ask interesting questions

To appear confident you need to show the interviewer that you have clarity of thought. Asking relevant questions about the job will give the impression that you are genuinely interested in working for them. It will convince them that you can be a potential asset to the company. This will also help you establish a personal connection with the interviewer. But make sure not to ask random questions that are irrelevant to the job or the company.

Modulate your voice

Modulating your voice modulation will add some depth to your communication skills. It will make the interviewer pay active attention to what you are saying and that is what we want. Moreover, modulating your voice to lay emphasis on certain aspects will make you seem confident about yourself. It is in fact a fool-proof hack to make you seem assertive to the interviewer. Even if your English speaking skills are not up-to-the-mark, modulating your voice will give the impression that you have strong communication skills.

 Be clear about your goals

As mentioned above, interviewers look for candidates who are clear about what they want and how they plan to achieve it. “Where do you plan to see yourself in the next five years?” The answer to this question entirely depends on you and there is no one way to answer this question. But the way you answer it can make or break your chances of getting selected for the job. At the end of the day, you have to be yourself and be able to showcase your strengths in the best way possible.
